Powering Rapid Growth: How ISC Built a Stronger Safety Framework with innDex
ISC, part of the GRS Group, is a fast‑growing UK earthworks and civil engineering contractor delivering complex schemes across ports and logistics hubs, highways, waste and marine infrastructure and residential civils. With more projects coming online and site teams spread across the country, the company needed a simple, reliable way to keep training, plant assurance, inductions and inspections in one place, from office to field. innDex represented the opportunity to give everyone the same source of truth: putting records, actions and evidence in one place, speeding audits and decisions and building accountability into day‑to‑day work.
With numerous complex projects ran on innDex, and to maximise the platform’s potential, ISC appointed Philippa Shaw as an innDex Implementation Manager. Her role was to coordinate a structured rollout, introduce tools in phases and ensure that teams saw value from the start. “Every month I roll out two or three tools,” Philippa explains. Combining a clear strategic plan for leadership with frequent on‑site coaching, her approach has helped teams across the business quickly adopt new ways of working and realise measurable benefits.
Streamlining time, attendance and inductions.
The first phase focused on time and attendance. Digital clock‑in/out gave ISC accurate workforce data and has now paved the way to introduce digital timesheets (Oct 25) which will remove the need for manual timesheets. “This isn’t Big Brother,” Philippa told site managers. “It’s taking paperwork off your plate and making things more accurate.”
Inductions saw an even greater transformation. Previously, new starters spent hours on site filling in paperwork for RAMS, briefings and toolbox talks. Now, operatives complete their induction online before arriving. The process logs carbon footprint data, flags any relevant medical information in advance and ensures every operative has the correct documentation before stepping onto site. “It just makes people more aware,” Philippa says. “If there’s something important, it’s surfaced.” All records remain accessible via mobile, allowing workers to revisit them whenever needed.
Driving efficiency through digital asset management.
Using asset management on innDex has changed the way faults are reported significantly. Previously, faults were raised over the phone or by email, often with no audit trail and a lot of back-and-forth between site teams and procurement. Now, daily plant inspections are completed in the app, and any faults automatically trigger notifications to procurement. This eliminates the need for calls and emails, enables repairs to be arranged immediately, and ensures every fault is logged with a complete digital record. Service histories and inspection records now sit alongside each item of plant, improving reliability and accountability across sites.

Strengthening safety and accountability.
Health, safety and quality are at the core of ISC’s work. Using innDex, site inspections and subcontractor audits are now logged, tracked and actioned in one place. Actions are assigned to responsible individuals and remain visible until closed, ensuring full accountability. “It gives accountability,” says Graham Bayliss, HSEQ Manager. “Those actions won’t disappear until they’re closed.”
The same streamlined approach now applies to observations and near misses. Should they ever need to, operatives report directly from their phones by scanning QR codes on their hard hats. Notifications are sent instantly to the HSEQ team, who can assess and act without delay. Toolbox talks are uploaded once to the company portal and distributed automatically across all projects, with sign‑ons tracked digitally. Progress photos also feed into the system, giving management real‑time visibility without disrupting site teams.
Faster audits and external collaboration
External audits, which previously required hours of paperwork preparation, are now significantly faster. Consultants receive secure, customised access to relevant dashboards ahead of visits, allowing them to complete much of their preparation remotely. “They can do the inspection, leave and complete their review from the office,” Philippa explains. “It’s massively time‑saving for both sides.” Graham adds that this allows teams to spend more time addressing any safety issues and less time searching for documentation.
Building consistent standards across projects.
innDex has also started to become the home for ISC’s RAMS and COSHH risk assessments, creating a searchable digital library that records who approved each document and when. Site teams can access the most recent version directly on their phones, ensuring work always follows the correct method. Philippa continues to refine governance, tightening approval permissions while maintaining ease of access. The business has also rolled out ITPs and standardised templates through innDex, improving consistency across all projects.
Cultural and operational impact.
Beyond operational efficiency, innDex has strengthened ISC’s culture. Early concerns about increased oversight have given way to appreciation for the protection and clarity the system provides. Site teams now have the tools to demonstrate compliance and good practice, while managers have confidence that information is accurate and complete. “Rolling out software on site can have its challenges” Philippa says. “My job is to show management what the site needs, and show the site how using innDex makes life easier.”
The impact is clear. Reporting that once took days now can take Philippa less than one hour, with data drawn directly from the innDex platform. External inspections and procurement workflows that consumed entire afternoons now take half the time. For Graham, the outcome is a more confident, aligned organisation. “It’s helping us have information in one place,” he says. “It’s aligning the business… and I’d certainly recommend innDex to others.”
A scalable foundation for growth.
ISC continues to evolve its use of the innDex platform, providing a unified framework for managing safety, compliance and performance, with plans to introduce formal KPIs for action closure rates and time‑to‑repair on plant faults. Timesheets have started to be rolled out, alongside continuous improvements to document governance. As Graham sums up: “It’s money well spent. We need it. It’s helping us.”

“They can do the inspection, leave and complete their review from the office. It’s massively time‑saving for both sides.”
